Mikkeli, Finland. – Johnathon Ouellette (Ottawa Canada) scored on a power play goal for the Eagles at the 2:14 mark of the first period. Shane Heffernan (Kitchener Ontario) flipped a nice pass to Johnathon who walked into the middle and shot. Forwards Kenneth Greer and Hank Levin were screening the goaltender.

"It was quite amazing that 10 different guys scored," said Keith McAdams, head coach of the Varkaus Eagles. "We were tired yesterday; it has been a long week for the guys, but everyone showed up to play today. As you can see from the results we have a balance team this season. We have a bunch of hard working guys with good potential who want to be here in Varkaus Finland. We will spend this week working on team systems.” The Eagles next game is Saturday in Polvijärvi.

Alex Hudspeth (Hagerstown, Maryland) scored a short handed goal with a shot from the slot at 12:18 in the first period. Dan Rice forced a turnover deep in Oilers defensive zone and Alex jumped on loose puck and he scored is second goal in two nights.

The Eagles Joshua Ouellette (Ottawa, Canada) scored at the 13:12 of the first period. Lou Sarcone pressures the Oilier defense and caused a turnover. Jeff Brannstrom (Hollywood, California) pick up the loose puck and made a perfect pass to Colin Port who made a quick pass to Joshua Ouellette for the one time shot and goal.

Kenneth Greer scored his first goal of the season @ 14:32 on a turnover. The Eagles where forecehcking and playing physical all night. Hank Levin (Lido Beach, New York) and Marc Lacombe (Ottawa, Canada) made a nice check in the offensive zone and made three quick passes for the goal.

Collin Port (Kamloops, BC) scored at the 15:34 mark of the first period. Paul Gagnon and Jamie Wicks assisted on the goal.

Paul Gagnon (Troy, MI) scored his first goal of the season @ 30:53 mark of the second period. When Collin Port carried the puck into the zone wide on a two on one. He made a saucer pass to Gagnon who was all alone in front of the net.

Dan Rice (Saratoga Springs NY) scored his first goal of the season 31:21 point in the game. Danny carried the puck into the zone and made a nice cross and drop pass to Johnathon Ouellette. Johnathon gave the puck right back to Rice who put it behind the Oilers goaltender.

In the third period at the 44:01 mark Jamie Wicks (Fort Collins, Colorado) picked up the puck behind his own net and scored on an end to end rush. Collin Port assisted on the goal. Three minutes latter Shane Heffernan (Kitchener Ontario) scored his first goal of the season. Jamie and Shane went on another end to end rush to score.

The Oilers Antti Aikas scored an unassisted goal 47:15 point of the third period. The Oilers scored on a 5 on 3 power play @ the 47:45 mark of the third period Kimmo Hokkanen scored the goal. Petteri Naumanen and Sami Kallio assited on the play.

Shane Degrace (Moncton, New Brunswick) ,scored his first goal of the season at the 58:55 mark of the third period. Paul Gagnon and Jamie Wicks assisted on the goal.

Rantasalmi, Finland. – Lou Sarcone (Marlton, New Jersey) scored the first goal of the 2008-09 season for the Eagles at the 11:33 mark of the first period. Collin Port (Kamloops, BC) and Joshua Ouellette (Ottawa, Canada) assisted on the power play goal.

"This was a good start and win for the Eagles," said Keith McAdams, head coach of the Varkaus Eagles. "We have had only a few practices, but I can see we have good hard working guys. There were a lot of positives to build on from our first game. We will definitely get better as the team gets our systems in place. We play Saturday in Mikkeli which will give us another game under our belt before the start of the season next week.”

Josh Levesque (Ottawa Canada) scored with a shot from the point at 13:49 in the first period. Paul Gagnon (Troy, MI) assisted on the goal and Shane Degrace (Moncton, CA) did a great job finishing his check and screening the goalie.

RU scored a power play goal at the 19:37 of the first period. The goal was scored by Olli Linsen and Arttu Reponen assisted on the play.

In the second frame, Alex Hudspeth (Hagerstown, Maryland) picked the corner from the slot and beat RU goalie Severi Silvennoinen with a snap shot into the top-left corner. Josh Levesque assisted on the goal.

Lou Sarcone scored his second goal of the night at the 21:45 mark of the second period. Josh Levesque took the shot from the point and Collin Port jumped on the rebound. RU scored their second goal of the night at the 28:09 mark on a defensive zone mistake. The Eagles left their goalie Dan Earles (Penetanguishene, Ontario) all alone in front of the net. RU Juho Nykanen score on the rebound. Tommi Falck and Jani Appelgren assisted on the goal.

Collin Port scored at the 36:01 mark of the second period when he took a wrist shot over the outstretched glove of RU goaltender Jani Muhonen. Lou Sarcone assisted on the goal.

RU scored their third goal on offensive rush at 44.03 point in the third period. Tomi Naukkarinnen scored the goal on a nice passing play created by Arttu Reponen and Toni Kohonen.

The Eagles stated practice Thursday September 4, 2008. Last season the Eagles started training camp on August 16, 2007. Most teams in Finland started on ice practice the last week in July.

"I am really happy with the guys this season," said Keith McAdams, General Manager. "Our team is younger, faster and every guy has a great attitude."

The player spent the last few days becoming familiar with living in Varkaus. Most players have purchased bikes to get around in the city. Some players will be using team cars and others will be taking the city bus. The housing situation this season is good. The apartments are about 1.2 kilometers from the arena. The apartments were fully furnished and are much bigger than last season. The team seems to be working hard and enjoying Finland.

The Eagles will practice 9:15-10:15 Monday through Saturday. The players attend school from about 11:15 to 4:00 PM during the week.

Notes:

The Eagles are looking to add one or two defense to the squad over next few weeks.

The Eagles will play two game on the road this coming weekend. The Eagles faceoff Friday September 12, 2008 against RU in Rantasalmi and Saturday September 13, 2008 in Mikkeli against Oilier. Both Games are scheduled to start at 18:30.

The Varkaus Eagles officially started their second season today when twenty one players from North America arrived in Helsinki Airport. "It is a long day for everyone, most players will be traveling 10-18 hours to just arrive here in Finland," said Keith McAdams, General Manager. " Then we have another 4-5 hours to Varkaus and the players then need to move into their apartments."

The players started school September 3, 2008. The players had a busy first two days meeting the media and adjusting to their new home in Varkaus Finland. The Eagles attended school orientation and were met by the media at Savonia University. All the players attend school full time while playing Hockey in Finland.

The Eagles will practice 9:00 am Monday through Saturday at the Vakaus Ice Hall.

Eagles Release New Logo and Jersey for 2008-09 Season:

(Varkaus, Finland) – Varkaus Eagles, Second Division Minor Pro Team in the Finnish Ice Hockey Association today unveiled the jerseys that the team will wear for their 2008-09 season. The WHA over the Eagles Logo stands for World Hockey Association. The Eagles announced last month that they have created a partnership and affiliation with the WHA.

The team’s home jersey features the new ’ logo with the Name "WHA over the Eagles.” The home jersey is white, and features teal, black with an gray ring from the neck down the shoulders through to the top of the sleeves. The name and numbers on the back will be teal.

The team’s road jersey features the new ’ logo with the Name "WHA over the Eagles.” The jersey is teal on the front features teal, black with an gray ring from the neck down the shoulders through to the top of the sleeves. The name and numbers on the back will be gray.

In addition to these jerseys, players will wear black helmets, black pants, and Teal, white and black socks.

“We feel that our jerseys represent a new look to a traditional hockey sweater,” Eagles General Manager Keith McAdams said. “It will be great to see a variation of these sweaters for the fans that support the Varkaus Eagles.”

The WHA Eagles will open their season on September 13 in Varkaus Finland with a game against Oilers, from Mikkeli.

The Varkaus Eagles agreed to terms Jamie Wicks from Fort Collins, Colorado. "Jamie has good speed and hands," said Brad Buetow, who coached division one college hockey for 20 years with the Minnesota Gophers and Colorado College in the WCHA. "Jamie is a similar player to Kenny Greer. He can play both the forward and the defensive positions."

“I have been told from a number of Division One College Coaches that Jamie has what it takes to play, said Keith McAdams General Manager of the Eagles. This will be a big step up for him, but I am sure he will develop and thrive here. I have known John for 10 years; he is character guy who will make the best of his opportunities. I needed a guy who could fill the role of playing defense, but could jump in and play forward. John will fill this role and do good job."

The management made a decision to only sign 22 players this season. This mean every player will dress for every game. IIFC rules allow teams to dress 22 players per game. The Eagles are counting on the WHA to develop and supply players during the season. The Eagles also have the ability to use 5 Finnish players on a temporary base to replace players who are released or injured. John previously had been Head Coach at California State University, Long Beach. The Red Star-Sofia , Varkaus Eagles and World Hockey Association have formed an affiliation Agreement. The organizations will work together to create opportunities for their players. The goal of the agreement is to develop junior hockey exchange programs, sponsorship, tournaments, player development, educational opportunities, for our players. All three organizations will be working to find and create opportunities for player in our organization. We will work together to foster player movement and create a hockey school program in Bulgaria.

"We will working side by side with Red Star-Sofia and the WHA to create programs that generate sponsorship and excitement for our clubs. For the Eagles we are looking to expand opportunities for our players to play professional hockey in other countries. The leadership of Plamen Galabov and Red Star will help us achieve these goals. Eagles Sign David Smith From MAHL

The Eagles have signed 23 year old, David Smith from Columbus, Indiana. David played his Junior Hockey for the Connecticut Wolves in the MJHL. David served as Captain of Wolves for two seasons. He led the team to the League Championship, Finals and two appearances in the USA Junior National Championships. In the 2004-05 seasons he was voted top player in the MJHL. David went on to play Division One hockey for Sacred Heart Pioneers for two seasons. Last Season in December he transferred to Western New England College. In 10 games with WNEC he had 1 goal and 5 assists. At the end of the season he signed a pro contract with the MAHL. In four games he had 3 goals and 2 assists for 5 points.

Lou Sarcone is from From Marlton, New Jersey. Last year the 5"-11' Forward who weighs 185 lbs played for the South Shore Raptors in the AEHL. Lou is gifted offensive and defensive forward. Ryan Hirtle-St.Denis was an All Star Defenseman for the Eagles for the first part of the year. He struggled the second part of season with some injuries, conditioning and the passing of his father. "Ryan is a quality defenseman," said McAdams. "But Ryan needs to focus on hockey, school, working hard and being part of the team. This is a make it, or break it year for him. We expect him to get on course with school & Hockey and have a great season."

Shane played his youth hockey in Kitchener Ontario. This past season Shane played for the Stratford Cullitons in the MWJHL. In 2006-07 season he Played for Ajax Attack in the OPHL Junior "A" Hockey League. This past season in 58 games Shane scored 20 goals, 31 assists for 51 points. He lead the league in shots on goals with an average of seven per game. At every level Shane has proven himself to be one of fastest and most skilled players in the league. "Shane's speed and skill is a great fit for the European game, said Keith McAdams, Head Coach of the Eagles. "The fans in Varkaus will enjoy watching this young man play."

The Varkaus Eagles announced today they have sign Luc Ouellette to be the Assistant Coach. Luc is 41 year old married to Laurie. They have three kids Josh, John and Belinda. The Eagles have signed Josh and John to play for the club. Josh is 20 years and played for the Orleans Blues Jr A. John is 18 years old,

and played Junior B hockey for East Ottawa.

Luc was a police officer for 14 years with the Royal Canadian Mounted police. Luc has traveled extensively with RCMP career from a six months tour of duty under the United Nations banner training the Haitian Police. He also served as a personal body guard to the Prime Minister in Canada. He left law enforcement to open up Forster Care Business with his wife.

Luc was born and raised in Ottawa area and played minor AAA hockey. He was drafted at 16 in the CJHL and played for the Ottawa Junior Senators, the following year he was drafted in the OHL and played for Windsor and Ottawa 67. He played for the Hull Olympiques in the QMJHL for Pat Burns.

Luc's coaching experience consist of coaching at the minor hockey level bantam and Midget from "A " to "AAA" Levels. He has worked as a trainer and team manager. Luc has scouted for teams on the Junior B, A and Major Junior Level in Ottawa area and for the QMJHL.
Luc, Josh & John Ouellette are extremely excited and honored to play for and experience the country of Finland.

What are the charges for transferring to other teams? Can you please explain how the transfers work? If I want to go back to USA to play or another European team what the process is? What about if a player has a chance to move up to higher league?

1. All Players are required to file for transfer to play hockey in Europe.

2. All Players need to be approved by Federation to move to another team.
3. The policies for movement are the same in Europe and North America.

Our Policies are same for every player. If you are the leading scorer in the league or if you are a fourth liner. The fees stay the same. We charge no development fees. We make no other demands from teams or players. Our fees for a player to move to another club are set.

Each players chooses the length of their contract and terms of transfer. The Eagles maintain the rights to the player for the duration of the contract. This is all outline in each players contract. All players are free to move up to another team in higher league, but that team needs to pay the 1000 euro(s) to the Eagles if they are keeping the player for the year. There are no fees if a player goes up to a team on temporary basis. We let players last season even tryout for other teams during our season.

All our players are free to negotiate movement to other teams up until June 1 of each year. Any player under contract is free to go to another team for a fee of 1000 euro(s). After June 1, 2008 any movement to other clubs must be negotiated between the teams involved. We can not make moves after June 1, of each year because it takes us a minimum of 8 weeks for resident permit for players. Our roster is frozen from June 1 to October 1 of each season.

Eagles Sign Shane Degrace From Maine Moose

Shane Degrace is from South-East New Brunswick, Canada. Last year the 6"-1' Forward who weighs 195 lbs played for the Maine Moose in the AEHL. Shane is physical two way forward with good offensive skills. Last year Shane had scored 21 goals and 24 assists for 45 points. "The Eagles are adding a young and big physcial player,"Said Keith McAdams General Manager of the Eagles. "We believe Shane has a great potential and will excel here in Varkaus. 1. What does the team provide for school? Scholarships?

7. Can we find part-time jobs?

1. The Eagles pay for open school for the players. The objective of the team is find quality student athletes who will do good in school and move into the degree program in Finland.

2. The team will be supplying Harrow Equipment to the team. Each player receives pants, gloves a number of shafts and blades. You can view the equipment on blog and web site.

3. The team has a locker room. But like most teams in Finland we have a drying room to store equipment. We do not have a gym membership at this time. Players can sign up on their own in a local gym at a discounted price. We will be using the city of Varkaus facilities this season for off ice training. Players are entitle to sign up for free use of public facilities, pool, gym and sauna. All members are allowed to use these city facilities.

4. The team lives in apartments. There will be 2-4 guys in apartment based on the size of apartments. Returning guys will have the bigger apartments. Guys will be spread out in different apartments throughout the city.

5. We do not pay players. We have limited resources. Our budget is two half times the budget of most Second Division teams. We have little sponsorship. But we will have a few bonus systems in place for guys to earn extra money for food this season.

6. The team pays for all bus expense for road games. The team pays for dinner after the game for all players.

7. Finding a part time job is possible. But jobs are limited in the city of Varkaus.

8. We will be resigning 10-12 players this year.

9. Transfer fees and insurance change each year. The transfer is presently 800 euros. I have not received information on insurance yet for this season. But it is under 200 euros. It includes full medical and dental. But you or your insurance company are billed and then a refund is sent to you. Your transfer fee is good for three years. The insurance fee needs to paid each year.

10. We suggest player buy a bike when they get here. The price of gas in Europe is very expensive.

I would like to thank all of the Eagles players who traveled to Finland and treated us to a great season of hockey.

Being young men, I know it was tough on you moving to a foreign country. I hope you left with positive feeling of the city and your experience in Finland. I know we have made some friends with players that we hope will last a life time.

I know speaking for most people the team is very important to us here in Varkaus. As you all know Varkaus is a small city, with lots of politics and agendas.

We were very excited to read that the Eagles were returning for the 2008-09 season. The partnership and affiliates announced in the paper should help the club be successful in Finland. My family and all the young people in the city would have been very sad if the Eagles did not play this season in Varkaus. I personally want to thank all the players for starting something new and exciting in Varkaus. Each player, from the best to the weakest brought excitement to the arena each game. I know the fans await the return of the Eagles to the city.For you guys who are moving on to new teams, I personally want to wish you all the best of luck from the city of Varkaus. The Eagles players brought a level of excitement to the Salvo region which has not been experienced for may years. I hope the city, and the area will get behind the club and support the team. The Eagles sent a commitment letters to FIHA and Local office confirming their spot in Second Division for 2008-09 season. There will be a meeting held June 3, 2008 to determine the starting date for the league. The returning date will be announced to the players no later then June 4, 2008. The Eagles have petitioned the League start later then the other FIHA teams. The players housing accommodations will be set up over next few months. This season the Eagles players will all live in separate apartment buildings. The team will be organizing apartments on individual basis. The apartments will be secured for players after all paper work is complete.The Eagles announced today they will sign a maximum of 20-22 players for the 2008-09 season. Details on the new partnership and affiliations will be available shortly. The FIHA approved the Eagles to use 5 Finnish players on a temporary basis. The FIHA and the Eagles agreed on the terms for the Eagles to broadcast games for the 2008-09 season.

The Varkaus Eagles Hockey Club will be going global. The Eagles will be announcing a partnership in the next few weeks. The program will feature the following: Educational & Hockey Exchange Program between North America & Europe. A Coaching Exchange Program for European & North American Coaches. Affiliate program with 6-8 Junior teams in North America. We are in the process of creating affiliate agreements with other European and American clubs. The Eagles have created a program where European teams can send players to the North America. The European exchange program is for players 21 and under. The Eagles are moving towards an affiliate agreement with a professional team in Europe and the USA.

The Eagles are proud to announce Adam Larrabee will be returning to the Eagles for the 2008-09 Season. "Adam is the type of player we want to build our club arround." Adam comes from the City of Beverly which is in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. Berverly is a resort, residential and manufacturing community, which includes Beverly Farms and Prides Crossing. Beverly is located on the North Shore, 17 miles northeast of Boston. Adam played Junior "A" &"B" for the Exeter Seawolves. He play two year with UMass Boston Hockey before signing with the Eagles.

Greer Returning to Eagles

The Eagles announced today that they will be renewing the contracts of Kenny Greer. "Kenny is the most improved player on the club."Said, Keith McAdams, GM & Coach. It was a direct result of Kenny being one of the hardest workers in school , the gym and on the ice. By the end of Febuary he battled his way up to a spot of the second line with Kent Merriam and Adam Larrabee."

Kenny played most of the first half of the season with Warkis, the Eagles farm team. He lead the team in scoring while there. Kenny had 5 goals 4 Assists in 14 games with Warkis. He was called up to the Eagles three times during the first part of the season. Kenny's role with the Eagles was a checking center. When the Eagles moved up to First Division in January, Kenny's role changed dramatically. His entire game improved and he earned a spot on the second line.

Kenny is from Taos in the north-central region of New Mexico. Taos is known for the desert and the ski resort of Taos Ski Valley. Kenny played Midget AAA hockey for the Pikes Peak Miners before signing with the Eagles. Kenny was the first player in the history of Finnish hockey to come from Taos New Mexico. The Eagles look forward to his return for the 2008-09 season. The Eagles expect Kenny to be impact player for the organization this season.

The Eagles are excited to announce the signing of Colin Port from North Country Community College. Colin score 21 goal and had 15 assits for a total of 36 points. The 6-0 forward lead the Saints to the Finals of the NJCCA National Championship tournement. Colin lived and played youth hockey in Kamloops, British Columbia. The Kamloops area is famous for rainbow trout fishing, Guest ranches, and cattle ranches. The city itself is located where the South and North Thompson Rivers meet, hence the name "Kahm-o-loops", the Shuswap Indian word for "meeting of the waters". The surrounding countryside is a combination of dry forests, grasslandsand desert like hills. While forestry has now surpassed ranching as the primary industry, ranching is still an important component in the makeup of the area.

In the off season Alex spends most of his time traveling around the United States to attend car shows. If Alex is not in the gym, or on the ice, he will be working on cars. Alex is somewhat of a celebrate when it comes to cars. He has been written up in magazines and is well known on the car show circuit.

Alex is one of the hardest working players on the Eagles. It was not uncommon to see him spend an extra hour or two training, after everyone else went home. The Eagles are looking forward to his return for 2008-09 season. The Eagles coaching staff is expecting great things from Alex this season.

Chet suffered a season ending injury for the Eagles in December 2008. He return to school in the USA and has been certified as a strength and conditioning coach. He lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. He started up his own business this spring. He is providing strength training services to pro and amateur athletes.

"Eagles Players Stay and Sign Hundreds Of Autographs."

The Eagles have been quietly going about business in the off season. We have been signing players. We will continue to sign players over next few weeks. We will be adding a new coach and marketing director to the team. We have been negotiating with potential partners and investors. We have been discussing affiliations program with pro and junior teams in the USA, Canada and Sweden. We will have a TV contract and Internet deal for the 2008-09 season. We agreed to terms with the FIHA to allow us to air the games. We signed a new equipment deal that will be announced in next week. The FIHA will be allowing the Eagles to use a maximum 5 Finnish players on temporary basis during the season. We are in the process of organizing new housing for players for the 2008-09 season.
